WHERE PALM TREES STOOD AND MUSIC WAS WRITTEN

Look up and you will see large holes in the wavy overhang that are now supporting lights. These holes were part of the construction of this condominium building in the 1960’s to preserve seven tall palm trees gracing the front of the property. The concrete was poured around the trunks and the overhang was designed as wavy to enhance the appearance.

The property itself was once occupied by royalty. Queen Lili’uokalani , the last reigning monarch of Hawaii, was known to write music at this beautiful beachfront location that once belonged to her aunt and uncle and eventually became her own property.

The palms, which became diseased and had to be removed in 2008, are remembered on the sidewalk plaques. Hawaiian Music is remembered in the names and faces of seven Legends of Hawaiian Music.
